Chris Ryall Interview!

Episode:
46

Or: IDW's Editor In Chief Unedited!
Jonny managed to catch up with IDW's publisher and editor in Chief Chris Ryall to talk comics and Transformers and find out what else IDW has been up to.

IDW has been known for the last number of years primarily for publishing the Transformers comics after Dreamwave went bankrupt. Since then they've spawned a number of successful books, the biggest being their relaunch of the G1 characters in a series of books starting with Infiltration. The books have since continued with Stormbringer, Escalation, Devastation, a number of Spotlight Volumes that also tie in and the upcoming Revelation. They've also started to reprint all of the older Marvel Transformer comics from the 80's into trades and various miniseries of the old UK stuff. And as if that wasn't enough, they'll be dipping into the old Dreamwave archives to reprint the Armada series for the first time ever. All of that and we haven't even touched on the movie tie ins!

They are also the house that brought up Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith and a cadre of horror comics like 30 Days of Night. As the years have gone on, IDW continues to add to their arsenal with more franchises like Doctor Who, Angel: After the Fall, Star Trek and most recently Ghostbusters while at the same time spreading their wings to diversify into other formats such a their children's imprint, "Worthwhile Books" and coffee table books like Stephen Romano's "Shock Festival".

During our sit down, I ask Chris all the important questions, what projects are coming up for them, how closely the movie books will adhere to continuity and the all important question - what the heck does an editor in chief do anyway? So strap in for a quick twenty minute journey into the Idea and Design Work factory. Are you listening?

He's created so many indelible images in our minds and set our imaginations ablaze with the possibilities of what these films may have to offer, it's hard to look at other movie posters at all. Afterwards, you should log on to get access to a deleted scene where we find out how Drew Struzan became one of the many people Pat Lee screwed over in the scandal that was Dreamwave's infamous fall!
